Club Charter
2018
- 2019 President Graeme Lowe -
Secretary Brian Marshall -
Treasurer Mark Hale
The years seem to move quicker these days !!
We are in our 45th year since charter in
1974. Membership is always a major concern for
most service clubs and we are no different.
We are holding our own with 19 members, down
from 21 following Wayne Foran’s move to
Melbourne and the loss of one of our well
respected founding members in Gordon
Prosser. Most of our current members have been
involved in Lions over 10 years and are keen
to assist where ever possible. We have a
great bunch of blokes and we enjoy our
outings , whether it be our regular meetings
at the club shed or cooking chips & donuts
in the chip Van, BBQ’s with our new trailer
or cooking Ollie Bols in the Dutch shed over
the show weekend. We have found that with an ageing club we
sometimes cannot complete a project without
the help from outside clubs or other
“Friends of Lions”. We have several major fund raisers a year,
starting with the Whyalla show, then later
in the year the after pageant fair & Carols
in the park. Other regular projects that we
are involved in are Bobs Mitre 10 monthly
BBQ, Telephone book distribution & Lions
Christmas cake sales (with the help of
Father Christmas & the lions sleigh).
Last year we raised over $38,000 from the
various projects. We needed help for several
of the larger projects and we has assistance
from Whydale Calisthenics, Gym sports, Kiwi
Netball & Stuart hockey club. It really is a
win win situation. They need money for their
local clubs and we need helpers for our fund
raising. From the money we raised we were able to
donate over $14,000 to local charities,
sporting clubs and other worthwhile
organisations. Some of these included $3,000
towards a scalp cooling machine at Whyalla
Hospital, $2,000 for local drought relief,
$3,000 to whyalla gift foundation and $1,000
to Royal Flying Doctors. Obviously to raise this sort of money we
rely constantly on club members and I would
like to particularly thank Secretary Brian
Marshall for his work this year in keeping
us on the straight & narrow, Treasurer Mark
Hale for keeping the books straight, Social
Barry Spry for all the cooking he does at
our club meetings, Service Tony Treasure for
arranging the outings of the chip Van, BBQ
trailer etc. and Don Van Weezep for all his
work on club records and our web site. There
is also Ron King for work at the shed &
Brian Carpenter for the kitchen & shed
lining & all the other members for their
tireless work which keeps the club running.
We might be a small club but it keeps on
going regardless. I congratulate Steve Pearce for taking on
the presidency and wish him well in the
coming year. I can assure him of total
support from myself and the rest of the club
members.
